Planning a bath remodel? A medicine cabinet might sound dated to some. The image of an ugly rectangle metal framed mirror with a partially rusted box behind it comes to mind. Expired pill bottles spilling out when you reach in for something.

But, medicine cabinets can be an important feature for your bath remodel. They help keep the counters free of clutter, adding storage space for items that you use daily or a dedicated space for things like bandaids.

Medicine cabinets are made with gold, nickel, black trim to complement the style of your bathroom. They also come frameless and even arched or oval in shape.

There are models that have LED lighting built into them. Some cabinets also have power outlets in them to be able charge a beard trimmer or electric toothbrush.

Most cabinets are swing door style, but there are models that feature bypass style doors if you prefer that.

Other features some cabinets have are mirrored back walls of the cabinet, double sided mirror doors, magnifying mirrors, night lights and soft close hinges (yes, just like on a kitchen or bath cabinet)

Medicine cabinets do not have to be relegated to the bathroom. A medicine cabinet in a vanity area in a bedroom can act as a dressing station and even store makeup or jewelry.

Medicine cabinets are typically recessed into the wall, but if that isn’t possible they can be surface mounted. Some models come with mirrored glass on the side of the cabinet. Although recessing a medicine cabinet is preferred sometimes there is plumbing or electrical in the walls that cannot be moved. Recessing a medicine cabinet in an outside wall is discouraged because the insulation in the wall will need to be removed to make room for the cabinet.
